Why scale matters more than you think
Mineral scale builds up invisibly inside your boiler, pipes, and valves. A little is harmless; a lot strangles flow, throws off temperature, and eventually kills heating elements — a repair that often costs more than the machine is worth. The fix is boring and cheap: descale on schedule, before you notice symptoms. If your shots are suddenly running hot and sour, or the machine is louder than usual, scale is a prime suspect.
How this schedule is calculated
Your base interval comes from water hardness — soft water every 90 days, medium every 60, hard every 30. Then we adjust for volume: light use (1–2 shots/day) stretches the interval a bit, heavy use (5+/day) shortens it, since every liter of water through the boiler adds a little scale. Backflush timing works the other way: it fights coffee oils, which build up with use, so heavy users backflush more often.

How often should I descale my espresso machine?
It depends on your water hardness and how much you use the machine. With soft water and 1–2 shots a day, every 3 months is fine. With hard tap water, every month is safer. Heavy use (5+ shots a day) shortens every interval. Use the scheduler above to get your personal interval.
Do I need to backflush if I descale regularly?
Yes — they do different jobs. Backflushing with detergent removes coffee oils from the group head and 3-way valve; descaling dissolves mineral scale from the boiler and pipes. Oil buildup happens much faster than scale, so backflush weekly (or biweekly for light use) even if you descale on schedule.
Can I descale with vinegar?
Vinegar works on scale but is not ideal: it can damage gaskets and rubber seals over time, and it leaves a smell that is hard to flush out. Use a proper citric-acid-based espresso descaler made for your machine type, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
