Caffeine Calculator
How much caffeine is actually in your drink? Set your shot count, pick regular, decaf, or half-caf, and see your total milligrams against the 400mg daily guideline.
126 mg caffeine
That's 32% of the 400mg daily guideline for healthy adults.
Caffeine follows the shots, not the drink
The number that matters is milligrams per shot — about 63mg for a standard double shot of regular espresso. Everything else in the cup (milk, water, foam) adds zero caffeine. So a 12 oz latte with two shots and a 2 oz double espresso deliver the same kick; the latte just hides it better behind milk.
Where 400mg comes from
The 400mg figure is the commonly cited daily guideline for healthy adults from the FDA and the EFSA — roughly six espresso shots. It's a ceiling, not a target, and sensitivity varies wildly: some people feel one shot at noon at midnight. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are generally advised to stay near 200mg, and if caffeine makes you anxious or jittery, your personal limit is lower than any guideline.
How to use this tool
Tap +/− to set how many shots go in your drink, then pick regular, half-caf, or decaf. The big number is your estimated total caffeine in milligrams; the bar shows where that lands against the 400mg guideline. Remember this is an estimate — bean, roast, and dose all nudge the real number around.

How much caffeine is in one shot of espresso?
About 63mg per standard double-strength shot made from roughly 18g of coffee. This calculator uses 63mg per shot for regular espresso and about 5mg per shot for decaf. Real numbers vary with the coffee's origin, roast, and dose — it's an estimate, not a lab measurement.
Is 400mg of caffeine a day safe?
400mg per day is the commonly cited guideline for healthy adults from the FDA and EFSA — roughly six espresso shots. It's not a recommendation or a hard limit: sensitivity varies a lot between people, and pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to stay much lower (around 200mg). Talk to your doctor if you're unsure.
Does a bigger drink have more caffeine?
No. Caffeine follows the coffee dose, not the drink size. A 12 oz latte with two shots has the same caffeine as a 2 oz double espresso — the milk just dilutes the taste. To change your caffeine intake, change the number of shots, not the amount of milk.
Does decaf espresso have zero caffeine?
No — decaf still carries a small amount, roughly 5mg per shot versus about 63mg in regular. If you're very sensitive, that can still matter, which is why the decaf option in this calculator isn't zero.
